The Research Behind Kitzerow’s Work

To understand autism, Kitzerow synthesized dense literature across disciplines into two systems, NeuroToggle® and BioToggle®. In doing so, she formed a hypothesis, Kitzerow’s Autism and the Comorbidities Cascade, and tested it.

First

The synthesis

Synthesis

After her daughter’s autism diagnosis, Kitzerow combed through dense research across genetics, biochemistry, physiology, neuroscience and education, and organized it into two systems.

NeuroToggle®

Matches teaching strategies to neuroplasticity, so skills and behaviors can be built.

The hypothesis

Original contribution

While studying genetic regulation and physiological plasticity, Kitzerow formed a novel hypothesis: Kitzerow’s Autism and the Comorbidities Cascade. It proposes:

  1. A prioritized stress responseGenetic and epigenetic factors induce a stress response that is prioritized over typical neurodevelopment and systemic function.
  2. Reallocation through the BH4 ShuntResources are reallocated through the BH4 Shunt, driven by redox-regulated cellular need.
  3. Traits cluster into phenotypesAutism and comorbid traits cluster into phenotypes based on the type, duration and downstream impact of those changes.

Then

The testing

She tested the hypothesis with the Jigsaw Puzzle Methodology, a comparative systems analysis:

  1. Builda biochemical network from UniProt gene-coded protein data
  2. Compareautism biomarkers and gene data against it
  3. Find the differenceredox regulation of the BH4-dependent pathways and precursor pathways
  4. Matchthe impact of prolonged redox-regulated changes in pathway activity to research on physiological trait outcomes
  5. Explainhow different types, durations, time periods and strengths of disruption lead to autism and comorbid trait clusters
Today

Where it stands

The Cascade is an emerging theoretical model, and evidence is converging around its accuracy. Testing and treatment protocols that align with it are beginning to emerge.

Since 2025, the mechanisms the Cascade proposes have been tested, intentionally or unintentionally, in independent studies. See the tests so far →

Status

The Cascade is still being researched, and its validation depends on continued testing and convergent evidence. Researchers interested in testing it can contact Kitzerow.
